ilume isn’t dog food
ilume™ is fresh, healthy food we'd eat, made just for your dog. We’re built on the belief that dogs are sentient, and that they deserve better. So we’re reimagining the paradigm of dog food altogether. ilume is an experience.
So what’s in ilume food?
Perhaps we should tell you what’s not in our food.
Dogs are family, so you won’t find anything in their breakfasts and dinners that you wouldn’t find in your fridge or at your local butcher. We spend more time saying, “No, it’s not right,” or, “Let’s make it more nutritious”, which means we take longer to develop our menu. But we think the results speak for themselves.
What you see is what you get, and what you get is premium, personalised nutrition for your dog. Giving your dog the best food means high quality cuts of meat and fresh seasonal veggies. And no added sugars or flavours. And nothing artificial. And cooking our meals in a way to preserve maximum nutrients - just like we’d expect as humans. Why would we feed our dogs anything less?
Less is more
The ingredients we use are whole, and we work to the notion that less is more. Less processing, less ingredients, and the least amount of intervention. We let the ingredients speak for themselves, and quality is the hero of every ilume dish.
A very clean ingredient list
We only use a few ingredients, and we’re not scared to tell you what they are. Across all of our meals, we only use the following ingredients:
- High quality cuts of beef
- Chicken breast and thigh
- Turkey breast
- Sweet potato
- Green beans
- Citrus fibre
- Apple fibre
- Rolled oats
- Lactose-free yoghurt
- Bones and cartilage (chicken, turkey, beef)
- Natural preservatives (vinegar, rosemary extract, citric acid)
All of our fresh meat and veggies are 100% Australian grown, and all of our meals are made in Melbourne.
It’s made fresh in our kitchen
We realised early on that we couldn’t create meals to this standard out of someone else’s kitchen. Developing food to this level is hard. No one has ever done it before, so we had to think outside the box.
That’s why we built our own kitchen, from the ground-up, no expense spared. Our Head Chef, Gary, runs our kitchen like a real Melbourne restaurant - and he’s worked at some of the best.
Before ilume, Gary spent his career cooking for humans at places like the Melbourne Club, The Willows and Zinc. He’s also catered for crowds the size of the MCG, so he’s experienced at serving many without compromising on quality. Now he’s here at ilume, helping us create unforgettable meals for dogs.
A few examples of what you’ll find in our dishes
- Crispy chicken and rainbow slaw
Chicken jerky (40%), carrot (30%), pumpkin (18%), broccoli (12%)
- Chicken medallions with a veggie mousse
Chicken breast (80%), chicken & veggie mousse (20%), made of chicken, rice flakes, egg, green peas
- Nutritious bone broth
Beef or chicken bones simmered slow and low with water
Food science meets art
Cooking is our thing, because ilumers are foodies at heart. Above and beyond a very clean ingredient list, we also use modern cooking techniques to preserve the integrity of ingredients and their nutritional composition.
For example, our dinner medallions are individually layered and rolled, to ensure the delicate mousse filling retains its nutritional properties. They’re cooked sous-vide, which means gently poached in their own juices; partly to retain moisture and richness, but also to keep the nutrients at maximum levels.
For us, this is where art means science. No wonder scientists mix with chefs at our kitchen. (Funnily, our chefs wear white coats, but our scientists don’t.)
Science fuels our hunger
Behind the dog-focused, human-quality meals, we have our in-house team of health and nutrition experts and university partners.
Together, we’re powering significant new studies into canine gut health and caloric needs for dogs, so that ilume meets not only your dog’s tastebuds, but their health needs too.
Science is our passion, and it fuels everything we do. When we found out that there wasn’t much research into dog nutrition and gut health, we were gutted ourselves. So we’re commissioning our own.
This research has given us an amazing basis from which to create the best food for dogs. We’ll keep funding this research, so that we’re continually learning and serving dogs in the best way possible.
We’re ready to serve your dog
Your dog is like no other. So we tailor our meals to their unique needs, and you get to choose their menu.
